Michael J. HARRINGTON, Ph.D. | Chairman & CEO
Michael J. Harrington, Ph.D., is the Chairman and CEO of Genoverde Biosciences, Incorporated.
As a dedicated co-founder and Genoverde’s™ primary decision- and policy-maker, Dr. Harrington also formulates and executes long-term strategy, chairs the board of directors, and is responsible for managing the company—all while setting the tone for the company’s values, ethics and culture by interacting with clients, employees, investors, and other stakeholders.
Over the past 16 years, Dr. Harrington has made building a solid foundation on scientific discovery his primary focus. Before his tenure at Genoverde™, he served as Senior Research Scientist in Biology at the University of Massachusetts Amherst (UMass), where he worked with Samuel P. Hazen, Ph.D., a co-founder of Genoverde™. Dr. Harrington’s prior positions include a four-year Postdoctoral Research Associates position at the French National Institute for Agronomic Research (INRA) in Versailles, France. At INRA, Dr. Harrington worked closely with international researchers to develop tools to identify the mechanisms regulating plant cell wall development, which underscores the scientific efforts carried out at Genoverde™.
In 2002, Dr. Harrington obtained his Bachelors of Science degree from Benedict College in Columbia, South Carolina, where he worked with Larry L. Lowe, Ph.D., and the National Aeronautics Space Administration (NASA) to better understand the relationship between space flight (zero-gravity) and muscle atrophy. In 2009, Dr. Harrington received his Ph.D. in Biology from the University of Maryland Baltimore County (UMBC) while under the advisement of Rachel M. Brewster, Ph.D. Simultaneous to his studies of the cellular and molecular mechanisms underlying central nervous system development, Dr. Harrington maintained his responsibilities as a Meyerhoff Graduate Scholar at UMBC.
Outside of his scientific responsibilities, Dr. Harrington serves as a guest lecturer and student mentor for the Berthiaume Center for Entrepreneurship at the Isenberg School of Management (UMass). His focus is to help burgeoning start-ups to develop and validate business models, identify key customer segments for product commercialization, and secure early stage funding. Most recently, Dr. Harrington accepted a contract position with VentureWell™ towards this mission.
Dr. Harrington feels that he has a responsibility to give back to the community, particularly those in underserved populations, through scientific discovery and mentorship.
“I have been blessed with opportunities that continue to amaze me. My goal is to make sure that the next generation of scientists and entrepreneurs make their dreams a reality. I’ve come to realize that the biggest problems for kids today are often a lack of exposure and opportunities, which are holding many back from living out their dreams. My goal is to help eliminate these barriers and provide opportunities to the best of my abilities.”
